Travel Insurance

I am finding myself getting increasingly frustrated with Travel Insurance Companies.

I have no problem with the fact that they will not insure you against and event happening to you when that can be attributed to a pre-existing terminal condition. Not only is this mandated in legislation but it makes sense.

The conditions pertaining to the insurance of personal luggage items is however a more complex issue. Most insurance policies will not insure your personal belongings from sunset to sunrise in an unattended vehicle unless it is in a locked compartment - like a boot.

Obviously this presents a problem for overseas travellers who are travelling in a camper van. Generally there are no locked compartments in a camper van and while it could reasonably be expected that you would be in attendance overnight because the van is also your home it is unreasonable to expect that you will always have dinner in the van.

So imagine the following scenario. You are in Spain (for example) where they have dinner late in the evening - usually around 9 pm. You park your van as close to the restaurant of your choice as you can and then head off for a meal. Alas your camper van is broken into during your meal break and your clothes and/or purchases are stolen. What can you do about this? NOTHING!

Unfair I call it!
